AgustaWestland AW101

The AgustaWestland AW101, a versatile medium-lift helicopter, is utilised for military and civil applications, demonstrating its adaptability in roles such as anti-submarine warfare, medium-lift transport, search and rescue, and utility operations. Born out of a joint venture between Westland Helicopters in the United Kingdom and Agusta in Italy, the AW101 first took to the skies in 1987 and entered service in 1999.

Boasting the nickname “Merlin” in certain operator circles, including the armed forces of Britain, Denmark, and Portugal, this helicopter is produced at manufacturing facilities in Yeovil, England, and Vergiate, Italy, with licensed assembly taking place in Japan and the United States.

Initially designated EH101 prior to 2007, the AW101 replaced older helicopter models like the Sikorsky SH-3 Sea King and served as a capable successor in various operational capacities. Its development began in response to the need for a modern naval utility helicopter, addressing requirements set forth by both the UK Ministry of Defence and the Italian Navy. The AW101 offers a mix of cutting-edge features, including NASA-developed winglets, a T-tail configuration, and the power of two Garrett TFE731 turbofans.

Throughout its operational history, the AW101 has seen deployments in active combat zones, supporting coalition forces during conflicts like the Iraq War and the War in Afghanistan. The helicopter’s success has led to further developments and adaptations, including the civil certification process for applications like offshore oil platform transportation and VIP services.

The AW101, rebranded from EH101 in 2007 following the merger of Westland and Agusta, continues to evolve and maintain its status as a reliable and flexible platform in the military and civil helicopter market.
