Eurocopter AS 565 Panther

The Eurocopter AS 565 Panther, first taking flight on 28 February 1984 and introduced in 1986, the Panther has become a stalwart in military aviation. Manufactured by Aerospatiale, now Airbus Helicopters, this medium-weight, twin-engine helicopter is utilised in a myriad of military roles, showcasing its adaptability in combat assault, fire support, anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, search and rescue, and medical evacuation operations.

In the 1980s, Aerospatiale recognised the need for a purpose-built military version of the popular AS365 Dauphin and embarked on the development of the AS565 Panther. Using the civil SA365 N variant of the Dauphin as the foundation, the Panther was tailored for utility, anti-tank, troop-transport, and maritime missions.

The AS 565 Panther, initially designated AS365 K, entered production in May 1986, with more than 400 units anticipated for long-term sales. Early models were equipped with Turbomeca Arriel 1M1 turboshaft engines, and in 1995, higher-powered versions featuring the Turbomeca Arriel 2C engine were introduced.

As of 2022, the Eurocopter AS 565 Panther continues to be produced, with Airbus Helicopters expressing the commitment to relocate the global production line to India if selected for a utility helicopter acquisition by the Indian Navy. This move exemplifies the Panther’s enduring global relevance and the manufacturer’s dedication to meeting the evolving needs of military forces around the world.
