The Eurocopter AS350 Écureuil (also known as Squirrel, AStar and now Airbus Helicopters H125), is a single-engine light utility helicopter. The AS350 was originally designed and produced by Aérospatiale and Eurocopter, and is now manufactured by Airbus Helicopters. Aérospatiale identified the need of a civil-oriented aircraft in the 1970s, following the production of their Gazelle aircraft which had not sold adequately in the commercial market. The firm started developing an economic and affordable rotorcraft, while also making it cost-effective in production and maintenance, the first prototype flying in 1974. The AS350 D was a new variant, utilising a Lycoming LTS-101-600 engine and being sold to the North American market under the name AStar.
