Eurocopter BK-117

The MBB/Kawasaki BK 117 stands as a testament to international collaboration in the realm of helicopter design and manufacturing. Born from a cooperative agreement signed on 25 February 1977 between Germany’s Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm (MBB) and Japan’s Kawasaki, this twin-engined light utility–transport helicopter became a symbol of combined expertise.

MBB, later integrated into Eurocopter (now Airbus Helicopters), and Kawasaki each played a crucial role in the helicopter’s development. MBB leveraged its experience with the rigid rotor system from the Bo 105, focusing on dynamic systems and flight controls, while Kawasaki concentrated on the airframe, structural elements, and various components.

The BK 117 has since become a versatile and widely embraced rotorcraft, demonstrating its prowess in various roles. Boasting the ability to accommodate seven to ten passengers, the helicopter has found favour in passenger services, VIP transport, aerial crane and sling work, law enforcement, military transport, air ambulance services, and search and rescue operations.
