Eurocopter Fennec

The Eurocopter AS550 Fennec and its variant, the AS555 Fennec 2, exemplify the essence of lightweight, multipurpose military helicopters crafted by Eurocopter Group, now Airbus Helicopters. Introduced in 1990 and still in active service, these helicopters trace their lineage to the AS350 Ecureuil and AS355 Ecureuil 2 series, with their names inspired by the resilient fennec fox.

Designed for versatility, the armed configurations of the AS550 and AS555 can be equipped with coaxial weapons, rockets, torpedoes, and various other munitions, making them adept for a range of military applications.

Originating from the Vienna Treaty, the military variants of the Écureuil were rebranded as the Fennec from 1990 onwards. Notably, in February 2007, India opted for the AS550 C3 Fennec in a substantial deal for 197 helicopters valued at US$500 million, choosing it over the Bell 407. However, concerns about alleged corruption led to the suspension of the deal in June 2007, eventually resulting in its cancellation on 6 December 2007. Despite this setback, the AS550 C3 remains in contention as India re-evaluates its helicopter procurement, emphasizing the enduring reputation of the Fennec series.

The operational history of the Fennec also includes a noteworthy event in January 2011 when Royal Malaysian Navy PASKAL commandos utilized a Fennec helicopter during the rescue of a hijacked Malaysian chemical tanker from Somali pirates. Demonstrating its effectiveness in reconnaissance and aerial gunfire, the Fennec played a pivotal role in keeping the pirate’s mother ship at bay while commandos successfully boarded the tanker, showcasing the helicopter’s crucial role in maritime security operations.
